The Hottest New Electric Cars of 2020

Manufacturers are taking the EV market seriously, and some are even slowly transitioning to an all-electric lineup. In past years, industry leaders have made major investments in developing newer, more modern EVs, as well as in investing in creating more and more choice in EVs. In 2020, and the coming years, consumers will see the fruits of all that labor, and be able to own a wide variety of different EVs, with futuristic features they may never have dreamed possible.

Audi
According to Car Magazine, topping the list of new exciting vehicles is the Audi E-Tron lineup. The Audi E-Tron and E-Tron Sportback are now available for purchase. With 241-mile range, Audi performance, 4-wheel drive, luxury interior, and unusual features, such as a thumb flick drive selector, the E-tron is likely to have a large following.

The E-Tron GT, which closely resembles a Porsche, is not available yet, but is close to production-ready. The Q4, which will be launched late 2020, will feature 83Kwh batteries, and over 280-mile radius, eliminating range anxiety as a reason not to purchase. It claims 80% charge in 30 minutes and a top speed of 112 mph, making it part family SUV, part performance sports car.

400 Miles

Industry Leading Range of the Rivian R1T

Trusted Industry Leaders
Many trusted auto industry leaders are getting in on the action. The Kia Soul will boast 243 miles of range, and Green Car Reports describes it as “having a fun look desperately needed among too-serious EVs.” With a lower price tag, and a small, sporty look, the Kia should appeal to a younger environmentally conscious crowd, including those buying their first car.

The Kia E-Niro and Honda E (with headlights that look like eyes) are also great 2020 choices for the consumer more interested in buying an electric vehicle at a great price than with a specific brand name. The Honda E features a fun retro look and 130-mile range, perfect for budget-conscious city dwellers.

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E breaks every stereotype. With 150 kw fast charging technology and 300-mile range, the Mach-3 is a traditional sports car with a new outlook. This new model transforms one of the most desired, all-American muscle cars in history, and turns it into an EV with the same mustang-proportions consumers have come to expect. Front wheel drive, with major batteries to allow a long range, these new EVs are heavy and powerful, but look like a traditional sports car, complete with long hood and angled windshield.

Lesser Known Electric Superstars
While some brands may be well known to EV enthusiasts, they’re still not on the radar of the average American driver. These up-and-coming manufacturers however may soon be Tesla’s toughest competition.

With the look of a classic sedan, the all-electric Polestar 2 features 275-mile radius, 480 horsepower, with a big performance update, and should be a contender in the upcoming year.

Rivian introduces their R1T Truck this year, their first EV off the assembly line. Boasting a range of up to 400 miles with up to 820 pound-feet of torque, the R1T may destroy the concept that EVs aren’t tough, towing-capable vehicles. Tough as any truck on the market, the luxurious, futuristic look of the R1T suggests it’s ready for the luxury truck consumer, a brand new demographic EV manufacturers looking to win over.

The Cupra Tavascan, from the VW Group, is a large, thoroughly futuristic looking SUV joining the ranks of little-known electric brands. According to Cupra, it is their first all road vehicle, and will feature 279-mile range.

Luxury Minded?
For those consumers who want the brand first, and the fact that it’s electric second, many new vehicles are coming onto the market this year for those who seek the best of the best.
The 2020 Porsche Taycon Turbo is pure Porsche, bringing electric to the Porsche brand, rather than creating an electric car and slapping the Porsche name on it. A shockingly fast turbo sedan, the Taycon introduces Porsche buyers to electric in a way that’s all theirs.

According to Car Magazine, the Lotus Evijah is the first new product from Hethel in over a decade. Code named Type 130, the model has been a well-kept secret. Lotus will “produce 130 models with a $250,000 deposit” to add your name to the production list. Deliveries will occur in 2020.

Maybe the new James Bond will be driving the Astin Martin Lagonda, an all-terrain SUV shaped like a bullet, that will be all the rage at the Geneva show. With a pull-out “viewing platform” in the back and lights that point downward to disperse light further, it promises to be an exciting new luxury choice, but might not roll into production in 2022.

With so many new exciting choices for EV owners, “little variety” had become one fewer element in the ever-shirking barrier between the majority of drivers and EV ownership.
